End of Events - Beginning of Rehab

Our Team finished the Trailwalker in 23 hours. The members are in perfect condition after the event, thanks to intensive medical support and on-field caring.

However, not all sportsmen have the access to such support. There're several common conditions after sternuous exercise like the Trailwalker and distant running;

Shin splint - it's the pain and spasm over your shin bone. Shin splint is very common among distant runners, yet it's difficult to be diagnosed and treated. In time and appropriate treatment would be crucial to overall prognosis.

Injury to structures of foot and ankle - like plantar fasciitis, stress fracture, sprain ankle and overused tendo Achilles (the cord on the back of ankle) leading to foot and ankle pain. Most injuries response well to physiotherapy and exercise therapy.

Injury to structures of hip and knee - infrapatellar fat pad syndrome (below the knee cap), ITB syndrome (side of thigh), and other more serious meniscal and ligamentum injuries. Most injuries response well to physiotherapy and exercise therapy, yet further operation might be indication in more serious condition.

The treatment should help you return to sports as soon as possible.

Should I Run?

It's the runners' and hikers' season now. Some of our clients are going to take part in Oxfam Trail-walkers and other running and trail events. We wish them all the successes.

I do not run or participate in any such kind of event; yet, I'm a serious medic for those event. There're several condition that could put them to rest or even end up early "retirement". Luckily most of such problems are preventable with proper measures. Those problems are;

Inadequate training and conditioning;
- Weak thigh muscles
- Faulty movement in knee joint / knee cap
- Casual practicipation
Wrong equipment;
- Blister and callus formation
- Improper ankle / knee protection
- WRONG SHOES

If you encounter any of the conditions above, don't run at the risks - contact your physio and doctors before getting back on the tracks.

The Basic is sponsoring and supporting a team for Trail-walkers this year. Should your team need our supports, please contact us through email.

Evidence-based Physiotherapy

Physical therapy, to me, should be regarded as a form of physical medicine. Therapists need to make accurate diagnosis, deliver suitable treatment modalities, and finally evaluate the effectiveness through objective outcome measurement.

The idea Evidence-based Practice (EBP) has evolved for decades.

Apart from accurate diagnositic, treatment and evaluation procedures, a EBP therapists should make ALL clinical decisions supported with clinical research. However complicated the reasoning process is, I believe EBP should be the safest and most effective clinical reasoning model, the Ideology of Clinical Reasoning. You may browse PubMed for those research and EBP material.

The Basic embraces EBP system. In the near future the Basic may recruit subjects for clinical research, too. Please logon to Basic Blogger to get the most updated infomation.

"Back to School"

The Basic is bringing forward the "Back to School" program.

The program composes of 3 stages. And at the very begining phase, the Basic would like to launch detailed "Postural Assessment" to pick up what's going wrong with your children. We believe detailed assessment should be utlmost essential to further rectification and management of postural dysfunction.

Should you like to join the "Postural Assessment", please feel free to contact us at 31191110 or email us.

Get Right Up for the World Cup

World Cup is coming in few days, football fans have to get up late for the games!

While fans devote their sleeping hours in fine games, most fans sacrify correct sitting posture watching the games compromising the health and stability of the spinal column. A typical football fans would sit like this;

The back never rests on the back rest, especially when you're sitting "in" a sofa; the neck is forced to bend forward only to keep your head upright to watch the game; you put your leg on a leg rest to really rest your leg, yet, you're building up enormous neural tension in your sciatic nerve...

I wonder if anybody can complete the World Cup series with such poor posture.

To sit upright for the game, we should sit like this instead;

The back finally rests on a soft back support; the head and neck keep so upright that minimal stress to the cervical spine can be spotted; the leg should rest on the ground firmly, and you can leave your leg rest for food and drinks.

We advise to use a soft back support, you can get it most easily in department stores or in the Basic; rather, you can use a small cushion with simular effect.

One final piece of advice - do NOT stress your body too much for the games and mind your physical and mental status very well. Enjoy watching, O-Lay.
